“Neither of the leaks (from the Democratic National Committee or Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta) came from the Russians. The source had legal access to the information. The documents came from inside leaks, not hacks.”
Former UK Ambassador Craig Murray
Not everyone agrees. First, the FBI and the ODNI seem unwilling to confirm the CIA’s findings. Next former US Intelligence Officers made it clear that the allegation is nonsensical. Now, a former UK Ambassador says it is simply not true. What is going on?
Former CIA Ray McGovern posted the following analysis on his website:
We have gone through the various claims about hacking. For us, it is child’s play to dismiss them. The email disclosures in question are the result of a leak, not a hack.
Here’s the difference between leaking and hacking.
Leak: When someone physically takes data out of an organization and gives it to some other person or organization, as Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning did.
Hack: When someone in a remote location electronically penetrates operating systems, firewalls or any other cyber-protection system and then extracts data.
All signs point to leaking, not hacking. If hacking were involved, the National Security Agency would know it – and know both sender and recipient.
Former British Ambassador Craig Murray, a close associate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, told the London Daily Mail that he personally received the email data from a “disgusted” Democrat.
Murray said he flew from London to Washington for a clandestine handoff from one of the email sources in September, receiving the package in a wooded area near American University.
What does Craig Murray actually claim?
Murray explains that he knows Assange (who has always claimed that the docs do not come from Russia) but he also says that Assange is not the source of his knowledge. Murray claims that he KNOWS the source (well, at least one of them..) and that he had a direct contact with someone who worked with this source.
Murray says that he met this person in Washington DC in September of this year. (Many people believe that the meeting occurred in September 2015.)
Fact checking — In this piece, Former CIA Ray McGovern confirmed that Craig Murray attended the 15th Sam Adams Award for Integrity ceremony which was held on September 25th 2016 at America University, in Washington D.C.
Next, Murray emphasizes that the DNC and the Podesta docs are two separate stories. But, he claims that both sets of documents were leaked not hacked.
Murray states that he did not deliver the Podesta documents to the WikiLeaks people who had them before September 25 2016. He admits having ‘played a small role’ but he would not say more.
Reading between the statements — it seems that Murray believes/knows that he DNC and the Podesta leaks have two different sources. But in both cases, Murray claims that the leaks come from US insiders.
The DNC documents would have been leaked by a political insider (pro-Bernie disgusted Democrat) while the Podesta emails may have been leaked by an Intelligence Officer because of the link between Podesta and Saudi Arabia for instance.
Will Truth Trump Clever?
Up to now, mainstream media have only reported stories along the line of the CIA’s report. Namely, both sets of documents (DNC & Podesta) were hacked by Russia and leaked to Wikileaks to help Trump win the election. [‘Everybody knows’ that Vlad has a grudge on HR Clinton and a bromance with Donald…]
So far, we do not know what the CIA “evidence” is but — considering the attitude of the FBI — we know it is circumstantial. I suspect that there is some ‘evidence’ that groups, believed to work for Russia, have hacked the DNC and Podesta emails. I suspect that there is NO evidence that Russia leaked that information to Wikileaks. (By the way, the story of the TYPO — legitimate instead of illegitimate — is nonsense.)
Finally, I suspect that the DNC and the Podesta documents were indeed leaked by two different sources (Both US insiders who had legal access to the material) and for two different reasons. The first leak was quite possibly politically motivated while the second one may have been ‘Intelligence’ minded.
“Russian Hacking” Revisited
Ray McGovern and Mike Papantonio discuss CIA claims about Russian hacking. Ray McGovern has this to say:
“I know ambassador Murray. He is a very honest person. He would not say these things unless he knew that. Not only do we know it is a leak, NOT a hack, but we also know who did it.”
William Binney, a former Technical Director of the National Security Agency, explains in technical but understandable English why he thinks it is a leak.
