A Letter from Lockerbie Investigator George Thomson

“As an afterthought I think that had the original Scottish Police Investigators obeyed their political masters by introducing the fragment into the chain of evidence in or around December 1989 then they may have got away with the deception but due to the fact that they chose to alter Forensic notes and photographs and change production labels and attribute Memos in relation to other pieces of evidence to PT/35(b) it was fairly easy to pick holes in their case.”

Lockerbie Investigator George Thomson

George Thomson is a former Scottish police officer who worked as an investigator with Abdelbaset al-Megrahi’s legal team preparing Megrahi’s appeal against his Lockerbie bombing conviction. Today, I publish as a full post a comment he recently wrote on this blog regarding an INTEL TODAY analysis of the Lockerbie ‘key evidence’: PT/35(b). This is a rather difficult letter to understand. It requires a bit of knowledge about the Lockerbie case and some real hard work to grasp the deep meaning of some of the details mentioned. In a follow-up, I will try to provide a few explanations to help the readers. Follow us on Twitter: @INTEL_TODAY

George Thomson is a former Scottish police officer who worked as an investigator with Abdelbaset al-Megrahi’s legal team preparing Megrahi’s appeal against his Lockerbie bombing conviction.

During his investigations, George Thomson discovered some potentially crucial anomalies in the evidence concerning the clothing that was supposedly sold by Tony Gauci and packed into the primary suitcase along with the bomb.

Through his long-established firm in Kirkaldy, G T Criminal Defence Investigations, George Thomson has developed a wide experience in the investigation and preparation for Court of many high-profile criminal cases including rape, murder and serious fraud. [ WikiSpooks ]

PT/35(b) — How was the Lockerbie Key Evidence Forged? [UPDATE & Comments]

As I have commented previously, this is probably the clearest article I have ever read on the Lockerbie case.

I remember in the early days of my involvement in this case when every bone in my body was telling me that the fragment was a fake but I just could not put my finger on the magic button.

For months I trolled through the clothing evidence and I found “doubt after doubt after doubt until the penny dropped when I found a contradiction between the Joint Forensic Report and the Crown Photograph Album and it was at that point I knew we had them.

Basically at some point in 1989 while Talb and The PFLP (GC) were the targets of the Scottish Police but sometime; probably in or around March 1989 a political decision was made to transfer the blame from Talb and his associates.

To achieve that end an officer from the Swiss Secret Police visited Mebo in June 1989 and received from one of their engineers a quantity of drawings and materials capable of allowing the construction of an MST Timer of a type which Mebo had supplied to Libya in the Mid 1980s.

These materials were handed over to OFFICIALS OF the USA.

How am I so sure of this, that’s easy, during our investigations in relation to our yet to be publicly broadcast film Lockerbie 4 we came into possession of a Swiss Government Document which detailed these points word for word.

We have handed that Document over to operation Sandwood.

Around the end of 1989 PT35b was fraudulently introduced into the evidence chain and in January 1990 a Special Scottish Police team was set up to try and identify the source of the fragment.

As we all now know, in the Summer of 1990 after the Scottish team had failed to identify the source of the fragment.

THEN in the Summer of 1990 one of the USA LEADING SCIENTISTS (or was he also a fake) identified the fragment as originating from one of the MST Timers supplied to Libya by MEBO.

That identification was to eventually seal the fate of Megrahi who had shared office space in Zürich with MEBO in the months leading to the bombing.

Since the penny dropped we have made great advances into casting doubt into the Crown case and no doubt the biggest breakthrough must be attributed to a very close friend of mine John Ashton who’s determined and tenacious investigations were to prove that the fragment PT35b differed from the Mebo timers in that the tinning on the fragment was of pure tin while the Mebo timers were timed with a mixture of tin and lead.

CASE CLOSED was the title of the film we made demonstrating Johns tenacious investigations Including the fact that one of the leading Crown scientists was well aware of the differences but chose to lie in Court during his evidence.

Spurred on by John I am now involved in another film which will show that not only does the Tinning differ between the fragment and the Mebo Timers but so does every other component.

I hear that [Operation] Sandwood is due to report soon and I await their conclusions with interest.

As an afterthought I think that had the original Scottish Police Investigators obeyed their political masters by introducing the fragment into the chain of evidence in or around December 1989 then they may have got away with the deception but due to the fact that they chose to alter Forensic notes and photographs and change production labels and attribute Memos in relation to other pieces of evidence to PT/35(b) it was fairly easy to pick holes in their case.

I suggest that had the original defence team shown some tenacity then there may never have been a conviction.

Finally I would like to mention a stalwart of this whole messy business and that is Jim Swire.

Jim, I salute the way you have conducted yourself throughout the long hard years and hope that soon you may see justice at last.

Lockerbie: “Case closed”

The Lockerbie disaster was Europe’s worst terrorist outrage, but was it also Britain’s biggest miscarriage of justice? This film investigates the case against Abdel Basset al-Megrahi and finds evidence to suggest he may have been wrongly accused.
