One Year Ago — Under pressure from the CIA, Harvard rescinds Chelsea Manning’s visiting fellowship

“[However] we are withdrawing the invitation to her to serve as a visiting fellow – and the perceived honour that it implies to some people – while maintaining the invitation for her to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak in the school’s forum.”

Douglas Elmendorf — Dean of the Kennedy School

“Harvard’s rescinding of Chelsea Manning’s visiting fellowship — following a backlash from current and former US officials — is a disgrace.”

Former CIA Analyst John Kiriakou

“This entire charming episode shows, regrettably, how spines go on sudden holiday in the academy when political forces knock at the door. Academics tend to be the first to fold when matters of courage are concerned, and often do so in graceless dissimulating prose. The Kennedy School of Government has not just been made safe for the CIA, but for academic hypocrisy.”

Dr. Binoy Kampmark — RMIT University, Melbourne

September 16 2017 — Harvard University has rescinded an offer to make Chelsea Manning a visiting fellow after Mike Pompeo — the current Director of the CIA —  cancelled an appearance at the university. The decision speaks volumes about academic freedom. Shame on you! INTEL TODAY can only hope that every scholar will cancel his next trip to deliver a conference at Harvard until the institution fully realizes the extend of their abject decision. UPDATE (September 16 2018) — On September 8 and 9 2018, whistleblower Chelsea Manning spoke to meetings attended by hundreds of people in Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand.

In August 2018, the Australian government denied entry to Manning, who had been scheduled to appear in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. She defied this attack on free speech and freedom of movement by addressing Australian audiences via live video link.

New Zealand’s opposition National Party and sections of the media had demanded a similar ban. The Labour Party-led government, however, faced with widespread public support for Manning, allowed her to enter the country.

END of UPDATE

Mike Pompeo had been scheduled to appear at Harvard’s John F Kennedy school of government to give a speech on global security concerns, but withdrew on Thursday (September 14 2017), calling the university’s invitation to Manning a “shameful stamp of approval”.

In a letter to Harvard on Thursday, Pompeo called Manning an “American traitor” and said he “could not appear to support Harvard’s decision” by attending the event.

Earlier in the day, the former deputy director of the CIA Mike Morell also resigned from his fellowship at Harvard’s Belfer school over Manning’s invitation. [Guardian]

Lies, lies and more lies…

Once again, Pompeo is lying. That is all he seems to be able to do. He lies about small things. He lies about big things. He is a congenital liar. And there is no cure for that terrible disease.

In his letter, Pompeo claims that:

“Many intelligence and military officials believe those leaks put the lives of the patriotic men and women at the CIA in danger. I believe it is shameful for Harvard to place its stamp of approval upon her treasonous actions.”

According to a newly released Pentagon analysis, the publication of hundreds of thousands of secret US documents leaked by the Army soldier Chelsea Manning in 2010 had no strategic impact on the American war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The main finding of the Department of Defense report, written a year after the breach, was that Manning’s uploading of more than 700,000 secret files to the open information organization WikiLeaks had no significant strategic effect on the US war efforts. And Morrell is back…

Former CIA Acting Director Mike Morrell also wrote to the university to announce his resignation on the same day.

“I cannot be part of an organisation – the Kennedy school – that honours a convicted felon and leaker of classified information.”

I regard Mike Morell as a psycophant [a rare mix of psychopath and sycophant, in other words a crazy sucking up to his boss]. Here is the opinion of former CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

“Morell is not a serious person. He has shown himself willing to do the bidding of those who lied about the intelligence before the Iraq war, bear in mind that intelligence was not mistaken, it was fraud, and he supervised much of it.

But the notion that he can be so childish, so adolescent, so much upfront about how tough he is, how he is going to kill Russians and kill Iranians…predicts a continuation of this feckless policy from which there is no exit and which really is a fool’s errand.”

Russia and Iran have suggested that Morell should seek the professional help of a good shrink. Levan Dzhagaryan –Moscow’s ambassador to Tehran — told the Tehran Times:

“I am very worried about the health condition of this person [Richard Shirref] and I recommend that he see a psychotherapist.

This holds true of the ex-CIA official [Mike Morell] whose interview was published by the CBS news agency.”

“The Harvard University Institute of Politics’ invitation for Chelsea Manning to serve as a visiting fellow for the 2017-18 academic year “was a mistake” and is being withdrawn, the dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government said Friday.

“I now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,” Douglas Elmendorf said in a statement Friday. “Therefore, we are withdrawing the invitation to her to serve as a Visiting Fellow—and the perceived honor that it implies to some people—while maintaining the invitation for her to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak in the Forum.”

The IOP announced Manning as a visiting fellow on Wednesday alongside former Hillary Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who would join former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

But the invitation to Manning, a transgender woman who was arrested in 2010 for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks, prompted backlash from top national security officials. Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell resigned his post Thursday as a senior fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center in protest to the invitation to Manning, and CIA Director Mike Pompeo canceled a scheduled speaking appearance at the Kennedy School later Thursday.”
