Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — “US Government Determined to Change the Behavior of Ayatollah Khomeini”

“Today, Secretary Mnuchin and I will discuss one of the many lines of effort to achieve these fundamental changes in the Iranian regime’s behavior as directed by the President. While important, these economic sanctions are just a part of the U.S. Government’s total effort to change the behavior of the Ayatollah Khomeini, Qasem Soleimani, and the Iranian regime.”

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo (November 2 2018)

“Lots of luck with that.”

General Michael Hayden — Former NSA & CIA Director (Tweet – November 2 2018)

On November 2 2018, the Trump administration held a briefing on reimposing sanctions on Iran. Secretary of State Pompeo said that the sanctions are “just a part of the U.S. Government’s total effort to change the behavior of the Ayatollah Khomeini.” Let us just say that the former Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran is simply making no bones about the U.S. sanctions. No, this is not a parody. And no, the quote does not come from The Onion. The following statement was really posted on the website of the U.S. Department of State.

“Today, Secretary Mnuchin and I will discuss one of the many lines of effort to achieve these fundamental changes in the Iranian regime’s behavior as directed by the President.

While important, these economic sanctions are just a part of the U.S. Government’s total effort to change the behavior of the Ayatollah Khomeini, Qasem Soleimani, and the Iranian regime.

On November 5th, the United States will reimpose sanctions that were lifted as part of the nuclear deal on Iran’s energy, ship building, shipping, and banking sectors.

These sanctions hit at the core areas of Iran’s economy. They are necessary to spur changes we seek on the part of the regime.”

Pompeo goes on to describe his approach as “laser focussed”.

Well, maybe, the CIA should inform him that Ayatollah Khomeini is dead; very dead. Actually, Khomeini has been dead for almost three decades.

I would therefore agree with General Hayden that it is highly unlikely that Ayatollah Khomeini will modify his behavior because of these new sanctions.

PS: This is not the first time that Pompeo is a bit sloppy with historical facts. In an attempt to build a parallel between Philip Agee and Julian Assange, Mike Pompeo (then CIA Director ) once said that “In its September 1974 issue, Counterspy publicly identified Richard Welch as the CIA Chief of Station in Athens. ” To point out the obvious. Counterspy could not have publicly identified Richard Welch as the CIA Chief of Station in Athens in September 1974 since Welch arrived in Greece in July 1975!
