Rwanda — French Investigators Drop Habyarimana Plane Shooting Probe [UPDATE]

“We have to interpret this decision by French judges as a form of resignation faced with a political context which prosecutors did not know how to fight. Rwandan authorities have never sought to help bring the truth to light.”

UPDATE (February 16 2019) — French Media have published a highly important document.

The DGSE — French exterior intelligence agency — knew as early as September 1994 that two “Hutu extremists” were the main sponsors of the attack on the plane carrying President Habyarimana.

According to this DGSE document, Théoniste Bagosora — an aide to the defence minister — and Laurent Serubuga — a former chief of staff of the Rwandan armed forces – were the main instigators of an April 1994 attack.

“The attack on Habyarimana’s plane must have been premeditated for a long time by Hutu extremists.”

“The assassination of several Tutsis and moderate opposition leaders less than half an hour after the presidential plane was blown up confirms that a lot of preparation went into this attack.”

And here you have it. Despite clear intelligence reports, French judge Jean-Louis Bruguière nevertheless accused Tutsi rebels — led by the current president Paul Kagame — of the attack.

I do not have to remind the readers of this blog that French judge Jean-Louis Bruguière played a key role in the Lockerbie (Pan Am 103) and UTA Flight 772 very murky investigations…

END of UPDATE

The plane carrying Habyarimana was shot down by a missile on April 6 1994, triggering the Rwandan genocide in which more than 800,000 Tutsis and Hutus died.

A French inquiry began in 1998, at the request of the pilot, who was French.

French judge Jean-Louis Bruguière accused Tutsi rebels — led by the current president Paul Kagame — of the attack.

Judge Bruguière concluded that Kagame — who led the RPF rebels in 1994 — had ordered the attack.

In 2006, arrest warrants were issued for a number of people close to president Kagame.

All charges were dropped on December 21 2018. The probe was a major source of tension between France and Rwanda.
