General Cesar Milani was the head of the Argentine Military between 2013 and 2015 during the Presidency of Cristina Kirchner.
On Friday February 17 2017, retired General Cesar Milani was arrested in the northern province of La Rioja as part of Federal Judge Daniel Herrera’s investigation.
The charges against him appear to be related to the 1977 kidnapping and torture of Pedro Olivera and his son Ramon, as well as the 1976 abduction of then 17-year-old Verónica Matta. The case of a young soldier named Alberto Ledo may also be brought against General Cesar Milani. At the time, Milani was a junior officer at the 141st Battalion in La Rioja.
“We are happy because we believe, somehow, that we are on the path to really having justice done. It is an auspicious thing that Milani was detained,” Ramon Olivera, one of the accusers, told Todo Noticias television.
Virginia Miguel Carmona, the chief federal prosecutor in the province of La Rioja , told reporters that Milani is also being investigated for espionage and embezzlement charges related to the U.S.-backed military dictatorship.
The Argentinian ‘Dirty War’ lasted from 1976 until 1983 and led to the murder, torture, and disappearance of more than 30,000 people.

Additionally, General Cesar Milani is also a suspect in the death of the former prosecutor Alberto Nisman (January 18 2016).
Former Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman – relying on the testimony of an Iranian defector named Abolghasem Mesbahi – had accused President Cristina Kirchner of shielding Iranian officials from prosecution over the 1994 bombing of a Buenos Aires Jewish center.
Alberto Nisman has by now been murdered although his death was first reported as a ‘suicide’.

Argentina revisits ‘Dirty War’ past with new US documents
A set of declassified documents sent from the US have arrived in Argentina and is forcing the nation to once again confront its violent past.
Tens of thousands of people are believed to have disappeared during the so-called “Dirty War” of the 70s and 80s in a violent crackdown by Argentina’s military rulers.
